How To Lose Belly Fat In 2011 - New Year Weight Loss Tips

Health and fitness is an ever changing field and over the last year health researchers and sportsscientists have discovered several new ways to help us to lose weight faster and get fit quicker. So it is only logical that we incorporate these new findings into our weight loss plans for 2011.

Many people find this surprising, some sceptics say that weight loss is just a simple process of starving yourself. This is not true. Starvation diets will lead to weight loss, but not optimum weight loss. Understanding how to combine nutrition and exercise is the route to optimum weight loss.

For proof that scientists really are learning more about how the human body works you only need to look at professional athletes such as Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps. In the last few years these two men have smashed many World records in their sports. This progress has only been possible with the advancements in nutrition and sports science.

So, how do you lose weight in 2011? And how to lose belly fat? And why should you worry about belly fat?

One of the findings of the last year is that the amount of stored abdominal fat has a direct impact on the risks of developing Type 2 Diabetes. So for improved health belly fat has to be targeted. So how to target? With a new exercise regime or a new diet? The answer is both.

Two studies were carried out to examine the role of exercise and diet for weight loss, to determine which was best. The results are very interesting.

Sports scientists at theOregon Health and Science Universitydiscovered that people who diet but do not exercise struggle to lose a significant amount of weight. The reason is because if you just restrict calories you lower your metabolism, which slows down fat burning. Your body starts to retain more fat in an attempt to survive starvation. So they concluded that you must exercise as well as diet.

Research published in theBritish Journal of Sports Medicine showed that exercise alone is not the best way to lose weight. Anyone that is overweight has accumulated fat as a result of eating too much. People that start an fitness plans without changing their dietsusuallyfail to lose much weight. Although they become fitter, they do not burn enough energy (calories) to compensate for their overeating. So they simply do not lose weight.

As a simple example, an overweight and unfit person would struggle to burn 300 calories in an hour though exercise. Being overweight and unfit means that you cannot work your body very hard. So, at best you will burn 300 calories. One small sandwich contains around 300 calories. 2 glasses of fruit juice contain about 300 calories. Over eating by just a small amount will stop you from losing weight.

So the answer for 2011 is that if you want to lose weight you must exercise and diet. Exercise should be done at least 3 times per week, ideally 5 times a week for 30 minutes. Exercise should be intensive also, with sprint intervals and weight training. Diet needs to be calorie controlled and healthy, just restricting calories helps you lose weight but does not give a healthy body, and healthy bodies lose weight more effectively than unhealthy ones.

So make your new year resolution to really get fit and lose weight in 2011.
