I have just read the story of a woman whose daughter with ADHD fell in with the wrong crowd and became a heroin addict. She was diagnosed with ADHD quite late, at the age of thirteen and that may account for the tragedy. But her mother noticed how she started to push away and all the frustrations of school and home finally broke her spirit and the rest is history.
Actually there is a link between ADHD and addiction but this depends on many factors so we cannot say with any certainty that a daughter with ADHD who has been on ADHD meds will risk drug addiction although it is certainly not unknown. This is brought home to us when we read the excellent and moving book by Wendy Richardson called When Too Much Isn't Enough: Ending the Destructive Cycle of AD/HD and Addictive Behavior.
I was struck by the connections between ADHD and addictive behaviors of all sorts. We are not just talking about drugs here but these addictive behaviors can destroy us and can determine whether we become addicts to eating, shopping or Internet.
Many parents who may have a daughter with ADHD are completely unaware of the problems. As many girls do not suffer from the hyperactive type of ADHD but rather suffer from the inattentive type, there is a chance that the daydreaming girl who sits at the back of the class and is distracted may never be noticed at all by the teacher. That often means that diagnosis is delayed, like the example I mentioned at the beginning of this article.
If you have a daughter with ADHD, forgetting things and distraction may be driving you insane. Homework is not turned in with a sickening regularity. This is one problem scenario. But there are ways we can help. The teacher can help too by posting the homework via email. If she has this set up, it should be no big deal at all. Then there are ways that we parents can help.
If our daughter has ADHD we should make sure that there is an extra set of textbooks at home so that forgetting the books in school or vice versa is no problem either. That means much less hassle all round. We can also make sure that our home is as ADHD friendly as possible so that we can use post its and reminders and simple charts on the fridge door with events, rules and so on for behavior as well as checklists. These will help us too! We all have senior moments so this can be useful.
Learning behavior skills whether in the academic or social and family setting is a vital part of any ADHD treatment plan. Did you know what is the best way to deal with that? It is by following a behavior therapy program at home where we can really get to grips with behavior problems and other issues.
As regards medication, the safest option of all is to choose a homeopathic remedy for ADHD which fits in perfectly with a program like the one I have mentioned above. If we follow these simple rules for a daughter with ADHD, we are well on the way to helping her avoid any addiction and grow up to be a well balanced adult and help to avoid problem scenarios which might have a tragic ending.
Isn't it time we found the right solution to the challenges I have mentioned above? Why not make this a reality for your daughter?
