The key to a successful and unstressful move is organisation and prior preparation. Take a look at these top moving house tips that should make moving as stress free as possible.
Packing often takes longer than people expect so make sure you start early, and don't leave packing to the day before the big move!
Moving is a great time to clear out any junk. You should start to de-clutter as early as possible. Separate any unwanted items into charity shop, EBay and boot fair goods and make sure you get rid of the stuff before you move.
Save old newspapers for lining boxes and wrapping objects. Make sure you have plenty of padding material and small sealable bags to put screws and leads in.
Decide how many boxes you will need and make sure you get boxes in a variety of sizes. You don't want to have only large boxes left and be forced to fill them with heavy items, making it impossible to carry.
Do all your laundry, you don't want to pack damp clothes and nor do you want to have to do all the laundry if the first few days of moving in.
Begin at the top of the house and move downwards. If you have an attic, it's a good idea to sort it out first (this will probably be the worst job so it's good to get it out of the way anyway).
Work systematically by getting everyone to pack one room at a time, moving onto the next room when everything is packed.
Make a packing book', an inventory that will make easy to tell what is in each box. Label every box with a letter and a number and write a brief description of the contents in the book next to the same letter and number. For example the master bedroom will be room A and each box will be labelled with a different number.
Make sure you keep all boxes for each room together as this will save time when you come to unpack. Boxes containing items you need the least should be loaded up first.
Write FRAGILE clearly on boxes you want to be handled with care.
Pack important documents together, such as birth and marriage certificates, and keep them in a safe place.
It won't be possible to unpack everything in the first day so make sure you pack an essentials' box for the first night. Include things like tea, coffee, kettle, plates, pen and pencil and paracetamol!
