All across Europe the speed limits are more than 70mph. So isn't it about time the UK increased their national speed limits from 70mph to at least 80mph.
It seems motorway speeding is at a rise and that's from my own experience as well as what I read online. Statistics say that half of all drivers drive above 70mph on the UK motorways, but then only 16 per cent actually go over 80mph, so in a way 80mph is a comfortable safe speed.
Countries such as France, Germany and Italy have a National speed limit of 130km, which is the equivalent to 80 mph and they also seem to have penalties for speeding which are more relaxed than the UK. From my personal experience of driving in Europe, I'd say I found that the European drivers seemed more sensible on their motorways and there was a certain respect for each other on the road.
So what effects have previous changing of speed limits had on roads? In many countries over Europe speed limit decreases have actually made significant decline in fatal crashes, where as in the USA this method had no effect at all.
Speed increases have had an adverse effect and countries all over the world have seen an increase in speeding and fatal crashes.
So to conclude, maybe increasing the speed limit isn't such a great idea. Who knows in the future cars may just be restricted via computer chips and smart technology to do maximum speeds depending on what road their on.
