Refining Your Magical Image-Apparel And Magic

Cultivating Your Image-Dress and Magic

There is no doubt that the most important part of being a magician is, of course, the quality of your magic tricks. The last thing you want is to have people view you as a magician that doesn't know how to perform his or her own tricks. That stated, however, your image or persona that you cultivate is key to your success as a magician. The bottom line is that the image is an important aspect of your performance whether you do street magic or perform in a theater. Ultimately, how you look will impact how your audience will see you and perceive your work.

Proper Attire for Success

Knowing what kind of look you wish to cultivate is up to you, but realize that you have the power to make a serious statement with how you dress. Don't be fooled- how you dress really matters. Whether you put on a velvet cape and a wizard hat or wear a t-shirt and jeans, the way that you are dressed will create certain impressions and notions about who you are as a person and what kind of magic you are likely to perform. Deciding not to pay attention to your image and presentation is, in fact, making a decision in and of itself. The old saying "you only get one chance to make a first impression" definitely applies to street magic.

Your Attitude is Part of Your Image

How you behave is also part of your image. If you haven't made a decision about your persona, then you might feel as though you are a little awkward. Those new to magic shouldn't worry too much about this while still early on in the process of learning to become a magician. The main goal is to perform in front of an audience. Remember that you are a performer, and the more you perform the better you will become. This is one of the reasons why street magic is so important for beginners. The hours that you spend performing will translate to sharper tricks and a more cultivated image.

Upon visiting a magic shop or magic store, you will likely find many ideas for how you can create a persona. Don't be afraid to ask others for their advice about what works and doesn't work. Especially feel free to ask other magicians or a mentor if you have one. Ultimately, you have to find an image and persona that works for you. If you are uncomfortable in front of an audience, they will often sense this. Thus, work to develop an approach and a style that you like and that makes you feel comfortable.
