The beautiful Country of Wales, on the western side of the United Kingdom has been blessed with numerous treasures from medieval times, and one of them is the intriguing walled town of Conwy - Conwy. In the Middle Ages the English and the Welsh battled over the right to possess this marvellous land. As a result there are numerous great castles scattered across the countryside of both genres.
As you approach Conwy, you will come upon the awesome and imposing English built Conwy Castle, its lime washed walls towering grandly over the town. The backdrop of Welsh hills and the winding river lend a romantic setting. No wonder the famous Welsh bards were so poetically inspired!
The castle was built soon after the Welsh were defeated by the English at the battle of Dolwyddelen. As with most of the grand castles built during that period, they were made to provide residency as well as security. The castle took about four years to construct, commencing in circa twelve eighty three. The overseer was one James of St. George, who wisely ensured the town walls were completed at the same time as the castle.
It has been said according to the local visitors guide that the walls of Conwy are the best and most complete of all Britain's town walls. Much of the wall is safe to walk and have twenty one towers and a length of around fourteen hundred yards. The vista from the top is spectacular. Not surprisingly, this has been designated a World Heritage Site.
The whole feel of this Welsh gem is one of stepping back in time, and there are many unique features one can enjoy, for example, the smallest house in Britain on the quay side, and Aberconwy House said to be the oldest town house in Wales, dating from circa fourteen hundred. This fascinating residence has been carefully and lovingly restored to display what everyday life would have been like all those centuries ago.
The town is rich with wonderful ancient homes, but one of the most striking is Plas Mawr a beautifully preserved Elizabethan period property which is a must see. As well as culture there is a wide array of excellent hotels and always a warm Welsh welcome for visitors.
There are also many fine bed and breakfast and self catering establishments at prices to suit all budgets. A vacation in this fascinating town and area of Conwy - Conwy will doubtless be a source of happy holiday memories for years to come.
