Alton - Hampshire is a market town situated in southern England. Although its position is inland it is a mere 30 miles from the nearest coast. The town is administered by the East Hampshire district council and was built around a settlement which dates back to Saxon times.
The Alton of today has a mix of history and modernity with historic buildings being a feature of the town centre, as well as a fair few more recent additions. The Curtis Museum houses fascinating exhibitions and artifacts which are testament to the history of the town. Among the most celebrated finds are a Roman cup and and a Anglo Saxon buckle. Other sites of interest in the town include the Allen Gallery, home to a wonderful collection of ceramics.
The countryside surrounding the town is truly stunning, with the South Downs National Park and other open green areas in abundance. Each with their own geographical features. Walking itineraries abound, from easy to difficult. Nature enthusiasts will have a field day spotting the various flora and fauna.
There are some lovely villages nearby too including Chawton, which is situated just south of the town. This is where Jane Austen lived out her final years and her former home is now open to visitors. The 17th century house contains many articles from the life of the English novelist including letters and documents as well as original pieces of furniture. Austen fans can also follow the walking routes on the Jane Austen Trail, around the places connected to her world.
Alton has its own railway station and is on the line to London Waterloo. Visitors can also see some historic steam trains in action on the Watercress Line which connects Alton with Alresford. There are a few different themed journeys, including the Real Ale Train which serves local brews to thirsty travelers during the journey.
Alton has been a market town since at least 1232. In those days the market was held on Saturdays and today it is held on Tuesdays. The Hampshire Farmers Market also comes to town once a month and stallholders sell a selection of goods including locally made preserves and breads as well as fruit and vegetables.
The events calendar in Alton - Hampshire is busy year round. During the summer months there is always something going on. Alton and Chawton play host to Jane Austen Regency Week in June, and in July there are the Alton Show, Food Festival and Bus rally to name just a few.
