subject: Painting Tools For Unusual Effects [print this page]

There are many new paints on the market, which enable you to create special effects and feature walls, and alongside these paints there are painting tools, which help you achieve desired effects.

Specialist Paints for Different Effects

Some of the paints you'll find on the market these days include metallic effect paints, suede effect paints, silk effect paints and other textured paints. While these may not be paints you'll use on all the walls of your home, they offer an easy way of creating an interesting feature wall (or different feature walls in the different rooms of the home).

Decorative Rollers

There are now a number of decorative rollers on the market, which can make it easy to create special effects, even by people with little to no painting experience. These rollers are generally suitable for water-based paints, and are generally used with specialist paints which are designed to create particular effects.

These painting tools include those which are designed to give: a flock sponge effect, a honeycomb effect, a marbling effect, a rough grain effect, a sponging effect, a bagging effect or a spatula effect. Most of these effects can be created using other methods, but rollers provide a very easy alternative for people who lack the confidence to experiment too widely.

Testing Your Painting Tools

Of course, if you are using these painting tools for the first time, it's a great idea to experiment for awhile first on a large enough area that you can see the actual effect you're creating. If you've purchased a specialist type paint for the job, you may want to experiment with it on a small area (as specialist paints are often quite expensive and you won't want to waste any).
