subject: Best Moment To Visit Ladakh [print this page] Every year the time to visit Ladakh changes a bit. Way back in 1995, July was the month declared open for motor traffic to enter. After a decade the situation is changed pretty much, In 2005, May became the time for people to enter Ladakh. A lot has changed in between the ten years. The passes do remain open until late October. Snowfall does hamper a lot of plan but still there are several peaks and treks that can be covered during the off season.
Tourists generally prefer July to August to take up treks in Ladakh. The roads do become wet and dangerous to drive on due to the snowfall here but they are still motor able during the summer heat.
Summer is also a time when there are many hill slides here making roads not a very convenient way to travel. At this time the safest way to travel is by flights. Many flights to Leh are time saving and quickest way to be here. There are less chances of flights getting cancelled as Leh experiences dry weather but even if that happens the airlines take care of your accommodations and make sure you get to your destination asap.
Many who prefer to fly to Leh, can also prefer to come here during the months of October and November. These are not ideal months to be here, but for those unseen and rare glimpses of the Leh weather, winter is actually the best time. What is dry and barren infornt of your eyes transforms into a white blanket of ice which is 3 to 6 inches deep. The sky is clear and paints a perfect blue for anyone to enjoy.
The rivers change colours from green to brown to blue. Many lakes are frozen, there are mountains and endless mountains and the overall natural beauty is something that can only be described.
If you are not a very adventurous person than June to September is an ideal time. Families who wish to explore the place from inside a jeep can come here during the summer season. For extremists, off season, October-November is the best time to be in Ladakh.
