Orchid Care Gurus - How To Plant Orchids

The orchid family is the second largest family of flowering plants. Do you want to know how to plant orchids? Let me teach you how, then.

Well, basically, orchids need the appropriate amount of light and water. But no plant will live on air and water alone. Other than these two, you must also keep in mind that orchids need fertilizing as well. Most orchid potting media provide support only, and have little or no food value. Therefore, you must fertilize your orchid with a plant food that is made specifically for them or for tropical flowering plants. Since most orchids are not heavy feeders, you can just feed them every couple of weeks.

Another thing that you should remember is that orchids have to be repotted annually or as you deem necessary. Orchid roots often creep over the edge of the pot before the body of the plant makes it to the edge of the pot. If you see that the body of the plant has grown over the pot edge or that the media itself breaks down and will no longer allow the roots to dry between waterings, then you know that your orchid has to be repotted already. Usually, though, and under ideal growing conditions, cultivated orchids outgrow their pot before the media breaks down.

The best time to repot orchids is at the beginning of the growing season. This will give your orchid the best chance to grow into the new pot and to secure itself. Ease the plant out of its old pot gently, and remove as much of the old media as you can. Pot your orchid in a small container, so that the delicate roots of the orchid will be supported by the pot. Water lightly until the plant adjusts to its new pot.

This is how to plant orchids.
