Interviews - The 3 Golden Rules
Interviews - The 3 Golden Rules

In today's economic environment interviews are sought after. So how do you make sure you are the one that gets hired, if you are fortunate to be shortlisted for interview. Having been the interviewer over 2000 times here are some simple principles for your interview success.

1. Interview First Impressions - create the right impression on meeting the interviewer. An interviewer makes their mind up within the first 2 minutes whether you are the one they are going to hire. The remainder of the interview re-confirms their initial decision is the right one. This is why first impressions are so important. A smile is an immediate display of a good attitude. Make sure you arrive to the interview 10 minutes early, even if the interviews are running late, they will know from the receptionist if you were late too! A good firm handshake with good eye contact is a must, this demonstrates confidence and trustworthiness. Remember to dress smartly and appropriately.

2. Interview Attitude - There are many ways to display a good attitude. For starters smile when you talk and maintain good eye contact. Be sure to show enthusiasm by taking the time to research the company. (Come on there is no excuse not to do this with Google! And if they do not show up on Google - suggest politely at an appropriate time that they spend some time on some basic internet marketing). To build rapport broadly mirror the way the interviewer is positioned. If they are leaning forward - you lean forward too. If they are sat back in the chair, you sit back too. To display a good attitude always keep the conversation on a positive. For example when asked about your relationship with your last boss, even if you hated your last boss - don't tell them. Instead focus on what kind of person you would prefer to work for and why.

3. Interview Examples - When answering a question do not repeat yourself, this can be construed as a sign of lying. Have 1 example to back up everything that you say. The empty phrases of giving 110% or being an excellent team player are just empty words if you have no examples of where you demonstrated this. If you need to take a brief moment after a question is asked to think your answer through, there is no harm in silence and this shows that you are thoughtful and mature in your approach.
