subject: Fontaine Des Innocents The Renaissance Relic Of Les Halles [print this page]

Despite moving ahead with the changing times, the wonder that is called Paris has been able to keep together many of its charming and interesting city features from the days of Chevaliers and Chateaux. These old features of the city adds to its richness and romance, and its one of the reasons why Paris till sees more than 40 million visitors eager to tread the Champs-lyses and have a stroll around Les Halles. Though relatively small when compared to many other star attractions in the urban landscape, the enigmatically beautiful Fontaine des Innocents has its own brand of magic that draws people to its presence in the Les Halles shopping district.

This lovingly crafted marble fountain has been an impressive landmark in Paris since 1550; and thats nearly 500 years, which is quite a lifetime for a small edifice.

Commissioned to celebrate the arrival of King Henry III in Paris, this delightful structure is a result of the collaboration of two creative minds; the sculptor Jean Goujon and architect Pierre Lescot. Originally known as the Fountain of Nymphs, this landmark was marked for demolition when the church ground next to it was converted into the market square, Marches les Innocents. But thanks to the efforts of one Parisian with a sense for fine sculpture; the writer Quatremere de Quincy, the fountain was saved from the sledgehammer and given a facelift as a freestanding fountain.

At long last, Fontaine des Innocents found its new home in the very centre of the new square in 1858. Today you will find that everybody who visit Les Halles for a uniquely Parisian shopping and dining experience do not forget to spend a few minutes admiring the marvellous features and delicate craftsmanship gone into the making of this renaissance gem which sits proudly on its pyramid pedestal. Gone are the days of the market and hawkers when the fountain found its enduring abode, but even today among the modern cafes, shops, and restaurants, Fontaine des Innocents pleasant presence is still found to be welcome in this timeless city.

You can find your way easily to Fontaine des Innocents from any Paris hotel Champs-Elysees locale is known for, as its home to luxury hotels Paris holds in esteem; like Le Royal Monceau, Paris France. When in the neighbourhood, dont forget to lend your ear to the bubbly song of Fontaine des Innocents as you enjoy the best of Paris.
