Here's Why An Online Nursing School Isn't Just For Anyone

With the long waiting lists at traditional nursing schools, it's no wonder many aspiring nurses are considering going to an online nursing school.

And indeed, an online nursing program can be a very viable option for those who've already earned a health care degree for licensed practical nursing, paramedic, or respiratory therapy. Even while you have a full time job, you can still work towards completing an RN degree online.

But then again, online nursing schools aren't for everyone.

What should make a person think twice about pursuing an online nursing degree?

These are just some of the reasons:

First, the cost is a big factor here. Being private institutions, online nursing schools generally cost more than local community colleges and state universities. But the cost is justifiable. In fact, it can be a much better alternative than sitting around and waiting to get into a traditional nursing school. However, don't enroll for an online school unless you can pay for the entire course of schooling. You can source the funds from student loans.

Two, it takes a lot of self-discipline. If you are not motivated and a self-starter, you may not want to waste your time and money with an online nursing school. Traditional classes where a teacher holds you responsible and gives points for attendance may be a better fit for you.

Third reason, you're pretty much on your own with online courses. Face-to-face interaction only takes place during clinicals. If you function better studying with others in study groups that meet in real time and being able to directly ask questions from a teacher right when they occur to you, you may be better off in a regular nursing school.

Four, they require some - very minor - level of computer and internet literacy. If you aren't at that level, you may find yourself struggling to find your coursework, your assignments, and other vital information. Still, it doesn't mean you can't ever pursue an online nursing degree -- you can and should. But first, upgrade your level of computer literacy so that you will be comfortable enough with online studies.

So before you sign up for an online nursing program, make sure that it's the right form of schooling for you.
