Our furry companions and feathered friends within the animal kingdom who have not gone into hibernation need our help and even more so as the temperatures drop and snow covers any normal food source.
Termed the Big Freeze', nature organisations across the UK have put out a plea for help as birds and mammals have a greater task than we do, trying to get through each day, and finding food supplies.
To help feed birds, the RSPB has issued a six point plan that can attract rarities to your garden and can help to feed our feathered friends.
The first tip is to put out high calorie seed mixes onto a bird-table or area that they can fly too and rest. Kitchen scraps such as grated cheese, pastry and porridge oats are also good for birds to eat.
The second tip involves putting out hanging feeders with sunflower hearts, seeds, sunflower rich mixes and unsalted peanuts.
Thirdly to ensure there is water out for the smaller animals, and that it is not frozen but tepid.
Fruits such as pears and apples can be put out for the blackbirds as well as bird food bars, which are similarly goods for tree keepers.
Nest boxes need to be put out wherever possible as shelter for smaller birds and also for a place that they can breed later on.
It is vital that we pull together for our feathered friends and especially during this harsh weather.
The RSPB has also stated that birds and mammals need places to shelter and that at this time of year there is nothing better than a patch of weeds or some leaves left in a pile for them. If we do not rally together and help them, otherwise animal soft toys is all we may have left to remember our animal kingdom.
