Shire Piles were specified to solve a major issue for a national conservatory manufacturer and installer.
Major issues with the conservatory had been encountered due to the conservatory being built on clay sub-soils with a large oak trees in the vicinity without adequate foundations being specified. The conservatory had encountered cracking at the conservatory/house joint, along with ill fitting doors and windows.
Thor Helical Remedial were called and one of our Technical Managers visited the property and gave a full report on the structural problems which were being encountered. A repair strategy was then designed using the Shire Pile to underpin the conservatory and correct the faults. The piles were installed within a day, with minimal disruption to the householder. The scheme was then back by a 12 year insurance backed guarantee issued by the Shire Pile Approved Installer and backed by CGS.
Spencer Caizley, Technical Manager for Thor Helical Remedial advises "We are seeing this kind of problem frequently and are specifying the Shire Pile, or in some cases a complete rebuild with the new conservatory being founded on a Quickbase Foundation. Sadly, we see poor quality foundations being used and these simply cannot cope especially in areas with difficult soils (clay and fill) and trees in close proximity. The Shire Pile gives a quick and cost effective repair solution without the mess associated with more traditional types of underpinning."
Shire piles and Shire stabilizers have been developed over a number of years to provide a cost effective, engineered solution for subsidence repairs and to support new lightweight structures.
The efficient method of installation ensures minimal disturbance for the client and means minimal enabling works are usually required.
Shire piles are generally used in new build applications, and supported by full calculations and safety factors. Shire stabilizers are used in remedial applications where they are designed to work with the existing structure.
