The American National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) have revealed information detailing the reason for accidents, and distraction rates number one on the scores. The one hundred car naturalistic driving study tracked the driving behaviours of one hundred drivers, with the vehicles being equipped with video and sensors to track and keep record of the driving habits over the twelve month period. The vehicles were driven nearly two million miles between them, producing 42,300 hours of data for the researchers to toil through, to produce a really accurate study into driver behaviour. The database that was produced as a result gave researchers a vast amount of information to be able to achieve conclusive results on car accidents.
They found that drowsiness was a significant problem, as this raised the accident level for times than that of an alert driver.
The most common distraction however, is the use of mobile phones. Despite the ban in the UK, and the roll out of the ban across US states in 2009, with dialling, talking and listening on the phone all being of equal danger.
Reaching for an object will increase your crash prediction by nine times, and drivers who engage frequently in distracting activities are more likely to crash. A lot of drivers were found to be unable to predict a good time to look away from the roads, as it leaves the driver no reaction time if the situation around them changes.
