subject: Exercising Year Round At The Local Recreation Center [print this page]

I would like to know how many people visit our facility each year, it is surprising full year round. I would think winter months would be busier for aerobic and weights and summer for swimming, but not so. I rarely visit the rec center in the summer, I would much rather be on my bike, hiking the hills or running the streets. The fresh air does as much for me emotionally as the weight room does for me physically. The fresh air doesn't seem to be enough of an appeal for lots of folks; the weight room is packed all summer too.

The pools do bring swimmers constantly. We had a little mishap a couple of years ago when those nasty flu's were being spread by contaminated water at public pools. Two of our boys got it and wouldn't go near a public pool for a long time. Steps were implemented immediately at our rec. center, commercial pool supplies were brought in to fix the problem. We haven't had another incident. The pool supply companies are experts on keeping the pools safe and enjoyable.

I can usually be found in the winter months at the morning classes from kick-boxing, cycling to Pilates and more enjoyably yoga. Anything for a quick morning work-out. I laugh to myself every January when the classes are standing room only, but by March they have thinned considerably. I bet more gym memberships are sold in January that all other months combined!

I played competitive racquetball in college and was thrilled with our new courts. Unfortunately, I have bad elbows and shoulders which have slowed me down somewhat. The old rec center the courts were so bad, balls would fly off chipped walls and blood stained the floor in patches. I didn't know it was such a contact sport.

The ice skating rink is one area where I am not sure of the traffic. We have gone over Christmas vacation and it is packed, but I'm not sure about the summer, which would make sense. Our kids used to love to go on Saturdays; we need to keep back into it.

The recreation center is a place for working out, swimming, visiting, climbing and just an overall feel good place. It has been everything I hoped it would be when I heard of its conception almost five years ago.
