subject: A Review Of The Brilliant Motorola Defy [print this page]

The Defy is the latest Android handset from Motorola, boasting the usual array of Smartphone features, however with a very different feature that makes it stand out from the crowd. This model is almost impossible to damage thanks to some excellent specification in regards to durability, a point often overlooked by many manufacturers.

If one word could summarise the new Motorola Defy, then that word would be "tough". Motorola state that this latest addition to the range is dust proof, water resistant and and scratch resistant. This should make the phone appealing to many consumers, especially in the modern age of longer contracts. Looking around the handset the Defy looks every bit a durable phone. Three physical screws are dotted along each long side of the phone, making the unit look and feel incredibly robust. The device sports the common micro USB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and in keeping with the general design, both of these sport rubber covers in order to stop dust and dirt getting into them. Looking at the handsets 3.7" screen, this is made using Gorilla glass which has great scratch resistant properties, and certainly when tested, the screen came out unmarked. The water resistant properties are a little more confusing, yes the phone continues to function when held under a running tap, but who would use the phone in such circumstances, especially as the touchscreen loses much of its responsiveness. This may however come in handy should you drop the phone into any water. This is certainly a different breed of smartphone thanks to the above properties, but this doesn't really affect the overall look of the model, which remains sleek and stylish without ever being groundbreaking.

The Motorola Defy sports a high quality TFT display. This touchscreen is a capacitive panel and benefits from excellent responsiveness. At 480 x 854 resolution, only the Retina Display found on the iPhone 4 betters it for quality, and at 16 million colours, the vividness is superb on all manner of material including web pages and media. When viewing potentially complex websites, the Android 2.1 used on this model handles a variety of Flash formats so most sites are displayed fully. The screen allows double tap zoom or the the popular pinch and zoom, and when performing either function the screen re adjusts at great speed. The Defy incorporates a high speed processor chip that is clocked at 800Mhz, plenty enough for a phone such as this.

The Motorola Defy presents us with a smartphone on a par with the likes of the HTC Desire, but one that should last longer thanks to the excellent set of features included to increase the phones durability.
