subject: Brogues: 5 Tips On How To Wear Them [print this page]

There is so much that could go wrong with wearing any style of shoe, and even Brogues have some style rules that, when followed, can mean the difference between wearing a devilishly suave outfit or being the victim of a fashion disaster. Here is a collection of tips on how to successfully wear a pair of Brogues.

Play it safe

When you really have no idea on what pair to pick, especially if its for wearing at work or a formal event, you need to play it safe. The safest style you can choose are quarter Brogues in black leather. Quarter Brogues only have the characteristic detailing in the leather around the edge of the top cap, and none in the centre of the toe cap or else where as you would find with half or full Brogues.

Colour

Brogues are available in a huge range of colours. As hinted at, pairs in black leather are far more suitable for in the work place and formal events. Outside of scenarios with strict dress codes, the colour of the pair you wear depends on the colour of your trousers. Darker bottoms means darker shoes and lighter bottoms means lighter shoes.

Know Your Details

The terms used to describe Brogues give a clear indication of the amount of intricacy in the detailing done into the leather. Full Brogues are the most intricately detailed style in this type of shoe, whereas half (or semi) ones only have detail on the top of the toe cap and on the joint between the toe cap and the rest of the shoe. The final level of detailing is to be found in the minimalistic quarter pairs, which have only detail worked along the joint between the toe cap and the rest of the shoe.

Wide Style

Pairs with a wide toe cap design or better paired with clothing that is not necessarily baggy, but is not tight either. Brogues with a fuller design stop feet from looking too small when worn with classically styled suits or trousers with a wide width.

Narrow Style

Finally, if the suit you are wearing is sharply cut or you are wearing a pair of tight fitting jeans, go with a pair of Brogues that have a narrow toe cap. The narrow toe cap will fit in far better with the overall outfit in this instance and stop your feet seeming too over-sized in proportion to everything else you are wearing.
