As you head along the main N340 coast road from Marbella in the direction of Algeciras you will come to a turn off leading up to a mountain village called Casares. As you head up the hill you will notice lots of new developments on either side of the road but after a few minutes you leave these behind and continue to wind your way up through narrower country roads. Having gone through some steep climbs with mountains on either flank you will suddenly enter at the very top of a pretty white village.
From this entrance point you can park up and look across the roof tops over towards the ruins of the Moorish fort that was once the stronghold of Casares. In fact due to its locations and the difficulty in troops marching up the steep hills, Casares was one of the last Moorish locations to fall to the Christians.
As you enter the village it is a real picture postcard and everything you would expect a typical Andalucian village to look like complete with whitewashed houses, steep and winding cobbled streets and locals sitting in doorways chatting to each other.
Casares is a popular tourist destination and during the summer coach parties descend on the village to explore the winding streets and take in the Spanish charm of a typical white village nestled up in the hills. On a clear day you can even see the rock of Gibraltar and across to the African coastline.
If you want to experience what they refer to as the real Spain' then a trip to the beautiful white village of Casares will not disappoint.
Although Casares is up in the mountains providing stunning views, it is still only around twenty minutes from the coast, making it an ideal location for a holiday or short break.
