subject: Are You Ready To Be A Modern Guru? by:Neil Asher [print this page] I would like to introduce you to a concept that may stretch how you think of yourself. This is something I think is important for you to understand if you want to be successful at selling information products. The concept is what I call the Modern Guru.
Already, you are intrigued, right? You're asking, "What is a modern guru, and what could it possibly have to do with me?"
Well let's look at the word guru for a minute. What comes to mind when we hear this unusual word? The connotation of guru is "a wise master" or maybe even "a spiritual teacher." We think of someone we would go to mentor and teach us. This guru must be a very, very wise person, for sure.
The reason I say modern guru is because nowadays all of us are gurus at something. There has been so much modern success. There has been so much modern prosperity. We all have lots of free time now that we can spend and invest learning about different areas, each one of us blazing our own trail.
We are learning about particular aspects of life. We study success and business. We study Internet marketing. We become enthusiasts for certain hobbies. We become better and better informed about health issues. And as we learn about all these things, we get pretty good at understanding them, and we discover that other people actually want that information we've been gaining.
As we blaze that trail of our own lives, we are figuring out something that thousands and millions of other people would like to learn. So the process of becoming a modern guru is really the process of learning about how to get that knowledge out of our own heads and into the heads of other people. Information products present a great way to do just that.
So, let me pause for a moment and ask you a question: Would you like to write a book someday? Answer the question seriously. Have you ever thought, "I should write a book," even if you came to the conclusion it wasn't possible or nobody would buy it?
If your answer is "yes," then you are on the path to becoming a modern guru. It's already where you're going, because you want to write a book. Your desire, whether you call it a dream or a whim, is the critical first step.
And it doesn't matter a bit whether you've taken any action on it or not. You know you've got some unique knowledge in your head, and a book would allow you to deliver it to others. So the way I think of it, you are already a modern guru.
But why bother writing a book to share your knowledge? Sure, you might help some people and earn a bit of money. But let me tell you this: you could make even more money and help even more people if you directed your desire to creating information products based on your knowledge.
That's right. You can make a lot more money online with information products than you can ever make just writing a simple book. Your knowledge, packaged as information products, can create tremendous value and lead to both money and success for you in your future. And unlike books, the information products that you and other modern gurus can offer cost little or nothing at start-up.
When I was getting started, I simply wrote my book using Microsoft Word. It only took me a few weeks. Then, I turned it into a PDF file, which I uploaded to my web site. (I figured out how to do that by reading books, of course.) Next, I put up a shopping cart on my web site. For almost no money at all, I was able to start my information product business.
Just think about how incredible that is! As recently as ten or fifteen years ago, if you wanted to get into information products, you would have had to print a thousand copies of your audio program, which would cost you $20,000. Or you'd have needed to print no fewer than 10,000 copies of a book, which would cost tens of thousands of dollars. You had to have money in order to make money.
But now, thanks to the Internet and all of the amazing, free and low-cost tools available, anyone can start an online business. And let me tell you, anyone is getting started. I know a lot of people that are making themselves a lot of money, and very quickly, by taking what they already know in their heads, turning it into information products and selling it online.
So those are the modern gurus. And they began, just like you, with a desire to share their knowledge.
