Most of us have heard the term 'tummy tuck' but only lately has the term 'mini tummy tuck' become more widely used. Just what is the difference between the two? Tummy tucking performed on smaller tummies? A smaller incision? Only slight tucking during surgery?
A mini tummy tuck is none of these things. Rather, it is the exact same thing as a regular tummy tucking procedure, except for the fact that it only takes care of the area from the belly button to the top side of your bikini line.
The medical terms are abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and partial abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck). Though prior health requirements, preparation for surgery, technique and process are much the same between the two, they differ in that the partial variety is less invasive, takes less time, is generally for those people who only have areas needing attention below the belly button and thus requires a smaller incision. And a smaller incision means a smaller scar. The mini abdominoplasty can sometimes be performed endoscopically, so the surgeon can view the area with a micro camera while he conducts the procedure.
A complete abdominoplasty, on the other hand, will address a much larger area and will require a hipbone to hipbone incision with corresponding larger scar.
There can be a lot of difference between the two when considering the amount of recovery time required for one, versus the other. A mini can take as little as two hours or less - while the full abdominoplasty can take as much as five hours or more, depending on the patient's medical situation. With both procedures the patient will require general anesthesia. One difference is the insertion of drainage tubes in the abdomen during major abdominoplasty procedures, which will be removed later.
If you are considering either procedure but there is a chance you may opt to have another baby in the future, either procedure is not recommended. You would be best to wait until afterward, as is the case if you are planning to lose a large amount of body weight.
As with any surgery, particularly abdominal surgery, one should be completely prepared and decide which of the two is appropriate for you. You will need to discuss this with your surgeon, as he / she will guide you on the best options for you. Clearly, there are only a few differences between a regular and a mini tummy tuck but those differences are significant enough to note.
