Want to become a 3D artist and make your own 3D models, character or animation? Let's see if you have what it takes. Being a 3D artist and making animation can be extremely fun and rewarding. Just the thought of making my own super cool 3D video game characters makes my blood boil. However, the process of creation can be both thrilling and frustrating. Here are some characteristics that a 3D artist posses.
- An eye for art. Yes, that's right. Although as a 3D artist you will mostly be modeling polygons and meshes into objects, characters or scenes; a basic understanding and feeling for art is necessary. For example, the use or colors and the composition of a scene are all very important in the field of 3D animation. So pick up your pencil and start sketching now!
- Hard work. There are so much modeling, sculpturing and detailing behind those amazing characters and scenes from video games or movies. The workload for a typical 3D animation can be overwhelming for some. Don't expect to create jaw-dropping animation without dropping hours into it.
- Patience. Do not compare your very first 3D art with those established artists' works, and expect yours to come on top. The art of 3D takes time to master, to most artists; the process of creating is much more enjoyable than the end result. So have fun creating!
- Willingness to take criticism. When you put a work that you spent hundreds of hours on the internet for others to see, there will always be criticism no matter how good your work is (and they are probably right). Do not let these comments depress you; instead see them as motivators to get better! This is crucial in every aspects of life.
If you are a beginner, the best thing you can do is to take action! Do not be afraid to get your hands dirty. The easiest way to start is to get a good training program with 3D animation software. I recommend an extremely cheap yet powerful software with a complete video training course called illusionMage (More info at the bottom link). Follow the tutorials and start working on your own 3D animation. Who knows? One day you might become the top 3D artist!
