I was never a math major, and for good reason. Numbers confuse me. Rather, I settled quickly into the English side of things, focusing instead on grammar, sentence diagramming, punctuation and reader usability with technical documentation, etc. Later on, this transpired into work as a research assistant during my tenure as a graduate student; and it has since served me well in my current career choice as a writer. However, a great deal of credit must certainly be paid to those who are good with math and who worked within the university administration to help provide me as well as countless other college faculty, alumni, students and staff with massive opportunities for advancement.
They are faced with the task of keeping track of each and every dollar and cent that goes in and goes out of the university or college. In order to prevent this sort of pandemonium from happening, most colleges (if not all) utilize some sort of grant management system or research management system that helps college administrators keep track of various forms of funding and finance. These types of financial situations can include anything from which faculty members are on the payroll to who is applying for grants versus those who have already received grant monies. And depending on the size and scope of the university, you can probably see how it wouldn't take much for things to all of a sudden get extremely confusing if there wasn't some sort of management system in place.
Having accounting software greatly improves a college's accountability as well as organization in terms of knowing where their finances are being spent and with whom. Little does the student who is flitting around trying to find their first class on their first day of college realize that the entire experience wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for a little technology and a lot of know how from those who are involved in the financial management of that particular institution. It is because of grant management systems that college administrators are able to manage all of the finances as effectively as they do.
