subject: Make it your resolution to make this resolution [print this page] Year in year out we all make resolutions.Year in year out we all make resolutions.. Common resolutions are to stop smoking, to lose weight to start going to the gym.
January is the best time of the year to start planning for another resolution.
No one wants to start the New Year in debt, so if you overspent over Christmas why not make it your resolution to save up in advance for next Christmas.
January is the perfect time to start thinking about budgeting and saving in advance for the coming Christmas.
Lets say for example you start saving on 1st Jan and each week you put away 5. Over the 51 weeks till Christmas you will have saved 255. If you waited till October to think about saving you will have to put away a lot more than a fiver a week to get to your target.
Though let's be honest if saving was that simple, everyone would be doing it wouldn't they?
Here are a few tips to help you be a successful saver this year.
Be realistic
Don't set your target too high, sit down and go through how much you have coming in and how much you spend and work out how much you can afford to spend each month. If you try and save too much you may get put off by all the cut backs you are having to make to meet your target and give up. If you set a realistic target you are much more likely to keep saving and reach your target.
Out of sight out of mind
It is a good idea to keep your savings out of easy reach. It can be all too tempting to dip into them during the year so keeping them in a biscuit tin, piggy bank, under the mattress or in some other hiding place really is not the best idea. There are two main places that people choose to put their money and which you choose will depend on your tastes. Christmas Savings Schemes such as Park Hampers help you plan, save and be organized for Christmas as you choose your shopping and presents up front. However if you only want to save and don't want help to plan your spending then there are many different types of saving account that you can consider. Make sure that your cash is not locked in till after Christmas though!
Set up a direct debit
If you choose to save with Park Hampers or to open a savings account then it may help you to set up a direct debit. This way your money will come out without you doing anything, so you do not have to remember to manually make a transfer. This way you are less likely to notice that you are saving.
