subject: Don't Let Email Marketing Frighten You Away by:Shaun Edwards [print this page]

You've been selling that product you've developed for quite some time using traditional marketing and distribution techniques. You've been successful. However, your business associates, your friends, even your accountant keep mentioning the benefits from email marketing.

But, you're not quite sure because the subject eludes you. In fact, you haven't got one clue about email marketing so you've avoided the subject up until now. Yet, you are hankering to take your business to a higher level. You're looking to expand. You're looking for much more revenue.

"Are Your Sales Flat?"

You know you've got the product that people want and need. All your traditional marketing proves the point, but, although sales are good, they have become somewhat flat for some time so you know you need to expand into newer markets.

How?

One of the specific benefits of marketing through email is reduced delivery costs - obviously. The immediate savings realised can help the appeal for your product, specifically when you price it in such an attractive way that generates a good deal of interest. Yes, you still have design costs but the expense delivering a traditional direct mail marketing piece - the paper, the envelope and the mailing costs - are no longer experienced.

"Compel The Reader To View Your Website..."

Yet, what comes first? Is it the email campaign or an informative website? You do see where I'm going with this, don't you. Just like a successful direct mail advertisement will peak a reader's curiosity, hopefully compelling them to take whatever your call to action may be, an email advertisement should do likewise and specifically drive the viewer to that website mentioned.

The website is your online business whether you offer services or products. Therefore, if you intend to make sales by driving prospects to your site through email advertising, you need to create interest and trust. So, your email message when promising something your prospect will find at your website - it better be there or you've not only lost an immediate sale, but any chance at repeat business. Stay away from overblown language offering the best widget on the planet unless you have the information and numbers to back up your claim.

"Don't Miss This Opportunity"

This doesn't mean you shouldn't use active and comparative language describing your product or service. In fact, use of compelling text in both your email message as well as copy on your website is the utmost recommendation. Phrases such as "Act Now," or "Don't Miss This Opportunity" are important action phrases you should employ to compel visitors to convert to customers.

Although you can easily purchase email addresses comprised of people who regularly shop online and regularly exhibit interest in products or services like yours, building your own list for future marketing purposes is a great marketing tool. Therefore, when designing a website always include a mechanism for capturing a visitor's email address.

These visitors who sign up to receive information from you are giving you permission to send them future emails with product information and other updates about you and your business.
