At one time or another each of us hears the siren song of the open seas. We dream of explorers from an earlier time. We dream of adventures in the deep. We dream of the calmness and tranquility that only nautical exploration can provide. We dream, but typically do nothing.
Even today, with the advent of sailing courses , and the path of the day skipper within our reach, we choose to live with our dreams as merely illusions.
But why only illusion?
With RYA courses providing knowledge to allow even the most land lubbed novice the ability to nagivate familiar waters by day, and enough savvy to light the seas by night, there is no longer an excuse for any of us. We must live our dreams.
I must live my dream.
For years I wanted to learn to sail. I read books about sailing. I bought videos. I even played sailing based video games hoping to get a feel for the open water. It was not until I actually got a chance to go sailing with a friend that I learned what it was really like to be at sea. It was at that point that I decided to get my day skipper certification.
Initially, I was not sure I would be able to fit classes into my schedule. Through research I learned that much like a superhero dons a costume at night, the nautical student can learn the basics of seamanship, coastal navigation, and pilotage at his or her leisure.
With a bit of time and patience, I was able to get certified. Now, I just have to get a boat.
