subject: Interior Decorating Mistakes You Easily Can Avoid [print this page]

A lot of people stress themselves out, decorating the interior of their homes. There really is no reason for that.

Decorating your home can and should be fun. Home decorating should be an enjoyable way of expressing your very own personality and to use your own creativity.

So why do people feel frustrated while decorating the homes sometimes?

I think one reason is, lots of people just make the mistake of decorating without measuring and planning ahead and then they end up getting confused and frustrated.

Another major mistake people make, is trying to make the room in the house look like the picture they have seen on the cover page of a magazine. Safe yourself for that headache, because this is the wrong way to get started. Sure, it is nice to find some good inspirations and ideas on how a room could be designed and decorated, but you also need to realize, these are rooms mainly designed and decorated just for the purpose of taking the pictures. They are most of times over decorated or decorated with items in a price category, way out of most people's budget. So please don't try to copy a picture from a magazine and instead use your very own creativity and imaginations and find your very own decorating style. This will safe you from getting disappointed and frustrated. Always keep in mind, you want to have fun, and enjoy your time decorating. You don't want to end up with lots of money spent, and still end up in a decorating disaster.

The following are a few more helpful tips for you to remember, when decorating the interior of your home.

For each room you will need a "focal point". This is very important! If a room has a fireplace or a big window, this can be used as the "focal point". If a room doesn't have a "focal point", then you will need to create one. It can be as simple as a nice centerpiece or even a wall mirror, and you get started your decorating from there.

After you have found or created the "focal point", then the first thing for you to consider is the walls. The paint color or wallpaper color is very important for you to decide about what other colors you will use to decorate with. Those colors will have to accent the colors of your walls. You need to be aware of deep dark walls will make any room seem a lot smaller than it actually is in size. Lighter and brighter colors will make the room look bigger.

Another tip is, don't add a lot of clutter. No matter what theme or decorating style you decide for, when you are out buying Home Decor for that new room's look, it is much better to buy a few bigger decor items than lots of smaller pieces. You want to make the room seem warm, cozy and inviting, not like the show room of a decor and collectibles store. A few smaller pieces to accent the bigger pieces will be fine, but don't go overboard.

I've been in many homes where furniture was lined up from wall to wall. No wall space at all. This makes the room seem like it is closing in on you. This is one big mistake people make, and it will make you and your guests feel uncomfortable in that room after awhile. So what I suggest in a situation like this, simply to remove a few pieces, and you will feel the big difference. Most people are pleased and happy with their room again after a simple change like that. So please don't cramp the room with lots of furniture and select the size of your furniture accordingly to the size of your rooms. Bigger is not always better.

Another problem people seem to have while decorating the interior of their homes is, not being sure about, how high to hang pictures or mirrors. Mirrors and pictures should be hung about eye level. Remember, you and your family and friends want to enjoy looking at those pictures. Decorative wall mirrors, are made to check your appearance but are also made to make a smaller room appear bigger. They should be hung in eye level also.

Lighting is just as important. Some people, when they decorate, don't add enough lighting. You may decide to buy and install light dimmer switches, which are real nice to have. That's a great way for you to control the right amount of light in the room as needed. You don't want a bright, bright room all the time, where it makes you feel uncomfortable. Go by the size of the room, and decide from there what kind of lighting you will want. A couple of lamps won't deliver enough light in a bigger room. Always make sure you have enough lighting for reading, sewing or any other activities you want to enjoy doing in that room.

Another thought when decorating is the wood tones. Wood tones are usually a great way to accent a home, so make sure you consider this when you decorate.

This includes wood floors, furniture pieces, cabinets, and even unpainted base boards. My rule of thumb is, don't go with more than three different wood tone's in one room. If the room is small, then go with no more than 2 wood tone's.

Also don't forget, you want some life in your home. Flowers and plants are the way to accomplish this. We all know, you can't go out and buy fresh flowers every few days, so even the imitation flowers and plants can do the trick. They make flowers and plants look so real anymore, that even I sometimes have to feel them to make sure. Just changing the flowers and greenery

each season, brings a whole difference to a room.

I hope you are getting the idea now. Just remember, you can do it and it is supposed to be fun! Don't become too impatient in the process and make hasty decisions. This is something people regret later on after the decorating is done.

After the decorating is finished, every now and then refresh the room. I don't mean anything major, but from time to time take something down and replace it with something different.

This can be easily done with Home Accents like wall arts, throw pillows, throw rugs, vases, candle holders or anything that you just want that new look appearance. You won't believe, how just a few exchanges can make people think you have been busy decorating again.

See, decorating your home is actually easy and enjoyable to do. And remember, there are very few interior decorating mistakes that couldn't be changed. Just use a little imagination, plan ahead, measure, and take your time. Once the decorating job will be done, you can sit back and enjoy your newly decorated room or home, and know you did it all by yourself.

I wish you lots of Decorating Fun!
