subject: Locking Rural Mailbox [print this page]

Owning a home is such a huge responsibility that millions of people come to realize during their lifetime. At your home, you will surely have a mailbox, where all of your important documents will be delivered by your local mail carrier. If you do not work from home, are not retired, or do not have someone home during the day, it is possible that your mail could be compromised by your neighbors or someone trolling your neighborhood. It is illegal to tamper with another person's mail, which could lead to time spent in prison if you are caught doing so. The best way to keep your personal information safe is by locking rural mailbox at your house.

People who live in condominiums or townhomes usually have a mail room with walls covered in mailboxes. These mailboxes are usually locked in the front and in the back, which is on the other side of the wall, where the mail carrier inserts the mail. This prevents neighbors from stealing your mail or from a visitor to the complex stealing your mail. So many important documents are sent through the mail these days regarding your life insurance, bank statements, health insurance, auto insurance, stock information and much more. Protect your personal information and your identity from being stolen by locking your mailbox.

If you live in a single family home in a development where there are no community mailboxes, your mailbox can be susceptible to theft. Anyone can open the front of your mailbox and take a piece of mail from inside when you are not home. Anyone could also place anything they would like in your mailbox that is larger than letter or magazine size, which could be incredibly dangerous for you and your family. A locking mailbox can prevent people from stealing your mail, placing unwanted items in your mailbox, or browsing through your mailbox.

If you decide to lock your mailbox, your mind will be more at ease, and your personal information will be safe for the time being. You can either purchase a lock kit for your current mailbox and have it installed or you can purchase a brand new mailbox for your home and have it installed on your property. Once you have the lock kit installed or the new mailbox installed on your property, you will be issued at least one key for the mailbox. If you need more than one key because you do not live alone you can have the key copied at a local home improvement store for a couple of dollars per key.

It does not matter if you live in a major city or in the suburbs, having a locking mailbox will make you feel safer and protect your personal information. Even if your town has a low crime rate, crime can occur anywhere at any time of day in the United States, so protecting your information should be number one on your to do list at home. Safety should always come first, especially when your bank accounts and Social Security number are at risk.
