subject: Spotted Dick - It's Not What You Think [print this page] If you are from the United States then chances are you have never heard of spotted dick, well at least not as a food. It is not what you think it is. I will admit that when I first saw it, I laughed out loud and I had to buy a can just because I found it amusing. I never had any idea just how wonderful spotted dick would taste. So that brings us to the question.
What is Spotted Dick?
It is a popular dessert in the United Kingdom. It is also known as sponge pudding or spotted dog. You can find it in the United States in specialty food shops and right here on this website. It is a steamed suet type pudding. It is sweet and often served with custard. It is extremely common and popular in England. It is very similar to a pound cake but it is traditionally steamed.
The spotted part of the name comes from the use of various types of small fruits like raisins, currants and sometimes plums. The Dick portion of the name seems to be somewhat of a mystery with many different conflicting stories of how it came to rise. No pun intended.
Here is what's in it.
Eggs, Butter, Sugar, Vanilla, Flour, Milk and Raisins (The Spotted Part) Not just any raisin but Golden Raisins are traditionally used. These raisins do impart a slightly different flavor.
Sounds yummy to me, although I will admit that I generally do not like raisins in any baked goods but in this sponge pudding they add a great touch.
That brings me to the next most common question.
Does it taste good?
Yes it tastes wonderful and If you like pound cake then you should really try some spotted dick for yourself. It also makes a great gag gift due to it's silly name but the real surprise is just how good it tastes.
