subject: Let Your Living Room Furniture Speak For You [print this page]

The living room can be called the hub of the house as most activity and entertainment revolves around this room - be it just a family night or a formal gathering. A large part of the space will be occupied by your living room furniture such as a standard sofa set, a coffee table and a bookshelf.

While these pieces may not seem out of the ordinary, what will make them unique is how you mix and match old and contemporary furniture pieces to strike the right tone; comfortable, inviting and yet stylish - among your family and friends.

If you want a cosy and comfortable look, it is best to go for rustic or Victorian furniture with some intricate carvings that send you back to the past. Coffee tables or side tables made of solid oak or birch instantly add a sophisticated and elegant look to the living room. They are also durable and withstand weights. Use a Mizuya chest for multi storage purposes. If you are concerned about budgets, let me say that good, old furniture can be bought with great discounts from flea markets and second hand markets.

If you have a television along with accessories like music equipment and DVD/VCD players, get a wooden TV armoire that hides all the messy wires and unnecessary equipment. It also works as a good storage area. Throw in a comfortable looking couch with a few colourful pillows and floral draperies to add that pastel touch. You can also add your grandma's armchair to provide that personal touch.

If you are bored of the shades of brown and ebony in your living room, just get a second hand furniture piece and paint it with a fresh coat of colourful shade - this will make your living room look colourful, chic and haute! Again, you do not have to spend a lot of money on these pieces; scout for second hand furniture shops or keep a look out for auctions around neighbouring counties and villages. Leave your card with a few small antique shops and request them to call you if they ever come across such pieces. If wood is too much maintenance for you, get the summer in your living space with wicker furnishings. While they are affordable, they are also low on maintenance and provide a sunny cottage look to your house.

Some people prefer more contemporary furniture pieces made of rubber wood or steel or chrome that gives the living room a smooth, uncluttered look - in other words, minimalistic. Here, go for furniture pieces that are unconventional in shape. Maintain a mix of metal and wood to bring in varying accents. Since minimalistic design is all about being neutral, most furniture is either white or black or a blend of both. You can add some bright colours through accessories like artwork or a vase or a mural. Lighting is an important part of contemporary design and creatively placed lights can enhance the look of a furniture piece.

Your living room speaks volumes about your lifestyle and hence it is necessary to furnish it appropriately.
