Making a Small Space Appear Bigger

A first home is a great investment, but can also be quite small due to money limitations. But there are some great ways that you can make your home seem bigger.

Add a big mirror in the room. This will reflect the light, and the rest of the room, giving the illusion of additional space that isn't there.

By keeping the floor and furniture light it will keep the room breezy. Dark and heavy looking furniture will seem imposing on the room and make it feel much smaller.

By adding something to catch the eye at the end of the room you will draw the eye out, creating the impression of a larger space. If the rooms in your home are small, consider extending the flooring all the way though. The dividers at the door will make the room seem confined, so this will help the illusion.

Add vertical lines on a blind or on the wall to extend the eye up. It will take the mind off the width of the room. If you are happy with impact wallpaper, then opt for horizontal stripes, as this will make the room seem to extend as far as the eye can see.

Add glass where you can to make the room seem more transparent and airy. Choose large windows, glass tables and cabinets. Skylights will make the room seem bigger too.

Minimise furniture as this will make a small room seem cluttered and crowded, instead opt for furniture that can be attached to the wall, like floating shelves and desks. This will make your space seem larger.

If you are making any large changes to your home, check your Content Insurance to make sure you are covered if any damages occur.
