It's difficult enough when driving on the roads in the UK, to be aware of everyone around you and be careful, but it seems that the annual number of crashes caused by foreign lorries driving on our roads could be as high as nine thousand eight hundred, as they are less aware of the driving rules in this country. These accidents are costing us nearly fifty two million pounds each year, research by Accident Exchange has stated.
The majority of accidents involving foreign Lorries happen on the motorways, with forty two percent of motorway accidents occurring on the M25. Due to the speed of the vehicles and the size of them, the repair costs are astronomical and insurance assessors estimate that one in ten of these accidents are a write off.
Side swiping, which is when a lorry moves with a car in its blind spot, is the biggest cause of accidents involving lorries. Last December the Fresnel lens, a thin optical lens of plastic that improves driver visibility was issued to over ninety thousand drivers, but it doesn't seem to have done anything for the crash statistics.
"The awareness of British drivers to the dangers is just as important if this figure is to be reduced," says Steve Evans, from Accident Exchange. "Too few UK motorists realise that left-hand drive HGVs are unable to see vehicles overtaking them on the right. A greater appreciation would help."
