UK Builders - Are They Getting Unfair Press?
I'm entirely fed up of turning on the television and finding yet another programme about how UK builders robbed some little old lady or ran of with someone's life's savings which were meant to be spent on their dream home. Sure, we all know it happens but it has become increasingly popular in recent years to knock the UK builders and the question is, are they getting fair press?
UK Builders Get Exploited By The Media
If you happened to be off for a few weeks and left the tv on in the background it wouldn't take you long to note that there is quite a few hours of air time given to unscrupulous UK builders.
My concern of course is that over a period one can't help but get the overall impression that the majority of builders are bogus, rip-off little old ladies and are extremely likely to run off with your hard-earned cash if given an opportunity. This line of thinking of course is entirely farcical and entirely out of proportion to the industry as a whole.
All industries provide a percentage of poor services and I would challenge anybody to show me the evidence that the home building sector provides a higher level of poor performance in proportion to the negative media exposure it receives. The truth of the matter is that the tv companies spend an enormous amount of time and energy trawling the country to find the saddest stories they can dig up for one simple reason - to fill air time with negative sad stories that on the whole we all love to watch.
Personally I think it pretty sad that the tv companies get away with drooling out this sort of crap tv at the expense of doing a hatchet job on the UK builders. When I look at the buildings within my community and I note the architecture and the infrastructure I can't help feeling how fortunate I am to live in the UK where overall, the standards of buildings and property care is rarely equaled in the world.
American TV Have Got It Right
I'm not really a great fan of American tv, in fact I'm not a huge fan of tv on the whole but I can't help but notice that when it it comes to the American tv shows that include builders the majority of them highlight their builders and tradesmen is such a positive way. Take the shows where people have had some misfortune or other and are selected for a makeover or a brand new home. This is fantastic press for all that is involved and offers up the viewer some hope and faith in humanity. What a contrast to showing little old ladies with unfinished building projects and depleted savings.
The UK building industry has a large number of trade organisations that could quite easily pick up the mantle here and work with the media to promote the industry in a more positive manner. The sad fact of course is that all of the UK trade organisations that I have come in to contact with - after a lifetime in the industry - are all far too busy lining their own pockets and have no interest for a campaign of this nature.
Conclusion
There will always be bad tradesmen and unscrupulous individuals and businesses who will exploit opportunities to their own ends. If ever you want a good example of this form of exploitation all you have to do is look at the way the media treats the UK builders.
