Everyone Else Is Doing It
Everyone Else Is Doing It

Do you remember growing up when your parents would say, "If Chris jumped off a roof, are you going to also?" This was always the canned response when doing something, that everybody else was doing.

Even at an early age we are influenced by the opinions of other people. We want to feel accepted, to fit in, with the crowd. Most of us spend more time trying to impress other people, instead of just being ourselves.

In business you will hear the term, "Following the herd." In general terms this simply means, "Doing what everyone else is doing." Most people will live to work a job, start a career, seek marriage, have kids and raise a family. You will develop a "normal routine," and spend 35-50 years of your life working, hoping to retire by the age of 65. (I still think that is hilarious, many people think retirement is based on age. It's not, you retire when you have enough money to live on the rest of your life without working.)

When you pursue your passion you may never retire because you truly love what you do. In essence Retirement = Freedom. Doesn't mean you stop working, it means you are free from Financial Burden the rest of your life! What do you dream about? If your immediate response is, "Dreams don't come true," or "I don't have any dreams," chances are you work a job, or you are self employed such as a contractor, and live to work. Don't feel bad, "Everybody else is doing it," too! Well, almost everybody...

There is a group of dreamers out there who have decided they want to be different. They want to be unique, chasing their dreams and living their life on purpose. They believe, like we believe, that each of us were created for a specific reason. The dreams that we have are there for a reason, and instead of allowing the world to beat us up, or "Following the herd," we work everyday in order to achieve them.

If you have ever been told, "Get your head out of the clouds," or, "You need to be more realistic," or, "Why don't you just get a real job like everyone else," congratulations! While everyone else is taking the easy way out of life, the less risky, retire at 65 if you're lucky, working 40+ hours per week for building someone else's dream, you my friend are pursuing your purpose. There is nothing more rewarding than doing what you have been created to do.

Think about it. Why work for someone else when you can work for yourself? Why make someone else rich when you can become rich yourself? Why spend most of your time at work instead of at home with your family? Why spend the majority of your life working a job when you can build a business, an asset, that outlives you and continues to support your family long after you are gone?

Too many times people will criticize you for saying, "I am going to be a Millionaire," because they don't believe it to be possible in their own life. They often times will say, "Money isn't everything," or more often, "Money cant buy you happiness." These statements say a lot about the person saying them. For the most part they will be lower income and not happy! Do you see the irony in their statements? Whatever you do, remember what I said earlier in this article, "BE YOURSELF!" Do not allow someone else's limited thinking to affect your goals. Choose to dream, and Dream BIG!

Early in life my mentor said, "While everyone else is zigging, you gotta be zagging." The most innovative inventions of our time have come from risk takers and big dreamers. While they were told, "It can't be done," or, "That is a stupid idea, you will never succeed," it didn't stop them. They continued to push against the status quo.

If our parents thought doing what everyone else was doing was a dumb idea in our youth, why as adults have the rules changed? Is it perhaps that we have been programmed through school? Were most of us trained by the public school system how to work a job?

"Just because Chris didn't choose to pursue his passion, accomplish his dreams, and decided to work a job for the better part of his life, do you? If Chris jumped off a roof, are you going to also?" Now I am not saying working a job is a stupid idea. However, what I am saying, is a job should be used to fund the bigger picture. Invest the money you make from your job into your own personal growth. Then start a small business part-time to supplement your income from your job. My goal has always been to work myself out of a job as soon as possible. In order to do this you are going to have to build assets!

Look at what everyone else is doing, and do the opposite. Look at where everyone else is going, go in the opposite direction. There is a reason why most people live average lives, and only a few live an extraordinary life. Which one are you going to choose?

"We will do today what others will not, so tomorrow we can do what others cannot."
