Do You Benefit From the Economics of Sex?
The business of selling sex has been a booming industry for a very long
time, as everyone knows. In the last few decades, it's been quite
apparent that the U.S.has gone through a cultural change, and there's
been a marked increase in the acceptance of sexually explicit material
- pornography. In just a short period of time, something that was once
only found on the black market or in alleys of big cities, is now
delivered directly into homes and hotel rooms by some of the biggest
companies in the United States. Estimates are that Americans now
spend somewhere around $10 billion a year on adult entertainment, about
on par with that which they allocate to sporting events, buying music
or going out to the movies. In the name of 'giving the people what they
want, some of America's biggest brand names, and companies like General
Motors, Marriott and Time Warner are now making millions selling
erotica.
One guru in the industry, Jay Servidio, founder and CEO of Teleteria,
is a regular speaker at the industry's annual convention in Las Vegas,
Internext, where more than 200 adult entertainment companies gather
under one roof to network, schmooze and show off their latest wares.
The fans who wait in line and pay $40 attend resemble the same folks
you might see at a boat show, a political rally, a lecture series or
even a Tupperware party, for that matter. Suffice it to say, there was
something available for every sexual demographic - even material aimed
at the mainstream CNN or Fox News viewer. The products are for
consenting adults, for use in the privacy of their own homes or with
their laptop, PDA, Blackberry or iPod. Says Servidio of the business
that has brought him enourmous success, "The adult industry is now very
sizable - garnering respect, considerable financial clout, conventions,
trade rags, seminars - even a handful of lobbyists in Washington, D.C..
This is a business. I'm in it to help people reach their financial
goals. I'm in it to make a profit."
Servidio's hard work and leadership role in the industry has allowed
this Catholic school survivor, upon being approached to join the
business, to rethink his values and morals and preconceived notions
about pornography. He let go of the social stigma permeating his
observations of the business, used his background in telecommunications
and started Teleteria in 1994. It's required an enormous amount of
work and attention to detail and sheer stamina, but it's enabled him to
give his family the best things in life. His children are lucky to
attend one of the top five school districts in the entire United
States. He can stop for lunch and frolic in his swimming pool with his
daughters. Servidio and his wife drive luxury vehicles which are kept
in the garage of their sprawling suburban home. They don't tell many
acquaintances of the exact nature of their business, for the sake of
the children. There simply state that Teleteria is in the online
marketing business To those friends with whom they share the details,
there's sometimes a degree of shock. That is, until they explain the
scope of the business and all of the occupations their clients
represent - from insurance agents, retirees, doctors, lawyers,
accountants, artists, housewives - the list goes on. Each day, as
another client purchases a package to get started in the adult website
business, Jay Servidio and the Teleteria marvel at yet another
profession represented - so many walks of life that are represented and
step up to take their financial independence into their own hands.
"This makes economic sense. It's a thriving industry", he says with
enthusiasm, "and there's a great opportunity for profits in it. We at
Teleteria are always available to make that happen. With millions more
people joining the Internet each month, my only challenge for the
future is staying abreast of all trends, exceeding my goals and
maintaining my level of customer service and marketing support - and
ideally getting a little more time to get more sleep and smell more
roses."
