The lion is also known as Panthera Leo. It is called the King of the Jungle because of its prowess, confidence beauty, majesty and strength. The Lions live in a group of up to three males and up to fifteen females and their cubs. They are the only cats that live together as a family. All the females are related as they are usually born in the gruop and mature but do not leave it. The males once they mature leave the group and go to look for another pride they can dominate. Lions are purely carnivores. They prey on gazelles, impalas, buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras and small animals such as hares and sometimes reptiles.
The female lions are the ones who do most of the hunting. They work as a team to bring down the desired prey as most of the time; they prey on animals that are bigger and faster than them. Once they catch something, the whole family grumbles for it even the idol males. A lion's roar can be heard for over four miles away.
It is the only social member of the cat family. During the day, you can see them being affectionate to each other by touching, purring, licking and head rubbing. The males are territorial and they use urine, roaring and chasing away invaders to mark their territory. The male's stay in a pride is temporal. If another male comes and fights it off, it has no more power over the pride. It will go and try to get another pride to join. The new male joins the females, mates with them and establishes its family.
