We're now going to take a look at some of the rare guns in existence today and in years past. When we say "rare" we mean any gun that has not found its way into widespread use by the military, citizens, or even in movies. Some of these rare guns may be well known to those who have owned or used them, but other readers may not have even heard of them. The first of these rare guns is the M50 Reising.
The M50 Reising was used primarily during World War II by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. The Reising was made by American gun manufacturer Harrington & Richardson. The gun is labeled a submachine gun, although it really is more like a small semi-automatic carbine with automatic capabilities. Four versions of the Reising were made: the M50, M55, M60, and M65. The M50 and M55 were selective fire, with the M55 being lighter, while the M60 and M65 were semi-automatic.
The Reising is comparable to the Tommy Gun, and it found its way into the service due to the uncertainty of the supply of Tommy Guns. The advantage that the Reising had over the Tommy Gun was that it was lighter, cheaper, and easier to produce.
The Reising did have some problems during its tenure, which is part of the reason we're putting it under the rare guns category. The gun was difficult to clean, and as a result, would not function properly. The Reising jammed frequently due to its delayed blowback self-loading system. Also, if magazines became even slightly damaged, they were not usable.
The U.S. military eventually deemed the Reising unsuitable for its needs, since it experienced so many problems during combat. The gun was replaced by the M1 carbine.
The Reising M50 may be in our category of "rare guns," but it nonetheless is a great collector military surplus item.
