subject: Planning Your Move During The Winters [print this page]

It is a given that relocation demands detailed planning in advance. It can get tricky as it is, going for a cold weather move. There are quite a few factors to take into consideration before taking the plunge and start moving during the winters. A liability-free move in the winter months calls for a great deal of adapting to the weather conditions and also getting ready to counter the chill factor on the move.

To begin with, set aside warm clothes from the packed stuff. The warm clothes would be put to good use in the middle of the move. Supposing, the move gets delayed on the way. You would be warm and snugly protected from the cold till the move is completed. It is always advisable to plan well for the cold weather conditions and any other anticipated relocation hazards especially when it is a considerably distant move. The car or vehicle, you would be personally traveling during the move must be serviced to the hilt. The car breaking down during the winters could spell trouble more than one is capable of handling. An emergency kit should also be carried along which comprises of packaged food, bottled water, flashlights and a first-aid kit.

Some effort should also be saved for making things easier on the packers and movers company by way of clearing the driveways and sidewalks of any obstacles at both the old and new house. Any damage to the property could mean a liability which calls for being proactive in this regard. It is easy to see that there would be a great deal of things to take care of on the day, the move is completed. Therefore, it must be ensured that the heating system is operational from that day on. What else? The loaded stuff in the movers and packers truck would be transported in the cold and a plan should be devised accordingly. Liquids in the shipment which freeze in the cold should be excluded from the load while the moving company needs to be informed of the items which might suffer damage due to being out in the cold for too long so that proper packaging materials are arranged accordingly. Expert help should be sought regarding this so that the wrapping protects these items. Most moving companies do not transport plants and seedlings. In case, they are being transported along with you, enough exposure to sunlight should be allowed on the way.

As a footnote, taking the time to prepare something warm to drink for the movers would be a nice gesture.
