The Los Angeles Zoo has been open since 1966, and ever since then it has delighted both locals and tourists alike with its great range of animals and features.
If you are visiting Los Angeles with your family and you have young children to entertain, this should definitely be one of the main attractions on your list of things to do. The good news is that you can plan a visit whenever it suits you the best, since they are only closed on Christmas Day. Even if you are visiting for a Christmas break you can go and see everything on Boxing Day if you wish.

You can expect to see mammals, reptiles and birds during your visit here, but there are other areas of the zoo that are also well worth a mention not least the Botanical Gardens.
This might seem an unusual choice to keep inside a zoo, since the Botanical Gardens are filled with plants rather than animals, but you will soon see that it is well worth exploring this area because you will not see plants like it anywhere else in LA. Look out for such unusual specimens as the Chilean wine palm, and learn why and how these plants form a vital part of the zoo. We tend to forget that animals need shade just as we do, and many of the items in the Botanical Gardens will do just that.
As far as the animals are concerned, you can see some specimens that are frequently located in the wilds of America. Take the American black bear for example, which you can safely see at the zoo. The North American river otter is also there you might even see him if he isn't swimming or hiding from you.
There are also jaguars, snow leopards, meerkats and plenty more besides to spot during your walk around the zoo. As you might imagine you will need an entire day to really make the most of it here. This is true even if you avoid the reptile section. Not everyone is brave enough to visit this part of the zoo.
You will be pleased to know there are plenty of rest stops and places to grab a bite to eat or drink while you are at the zoo. Even if you bring your own food you'll easily be able to find somewhere to enjoy it.
The good news is that if you are planning a visit to the zoo as part of your LA holiday, there are lots of Los Angeles hotels nearby that will give you only a short distance to travel to reach the zoo itself.
