In spite of what some may think your assistant, support staff or business partner does not need to be in the same building as you. In fact they really don't have to be in the same city or country. They can work "virtually" from anywhere and still be accessible, productive and efficient utilizing the ever changing mobile telecommunications technology. Sounds complicated but it really isn't.
First let's determine the benefits of telecommuting, e-commuting, e-work or working "virtually".
1. The main benefit to me is flexibility. Having the flexibility of being anywhere in the world and still connect with clients, support staff, customers or business partner is the most important advantage to me. This also gives me access to a larger group of skilled persons I might partner with.
2. Cost - for employers the cost reduction is huge. Employees appear to be happier and more productive when telecommuting thus reducing the cost of illness, staff turnover and expense of large office space and added costs.
3. Personally I don't have a large gas bill for my car, my clothing expenses are less since I don't need to dress up to sit at my home desk. Grocery costs are less because I am not packing lunches - it's more economical to make a bowl of soup and sandwich to eat at home. Plus healthier since I am not eating out as much as I did when working in a traditional work environment.
4. Time ~ I do not waste hours in a day commuting. This is also an important aspect of virtual work for me. I absolutely hated commuting from my home to the office since the traffic was horrendous. I realize others have a worse commute than I did but for me it was terrible and not worth it.
5. Environmental benefits - the reduction of carbon footprint from exhaust fumes.
Working virtually has both negative and positive aspects to it.
I love the flexibility of self employment as a virtual business manager, setting my own hours and actually find myself being more productive with fewer interruptions. I love being able to walk down the hall and step into my "work environment" at a moment's notice.
One of the negative aspects of telecommuting is isolation. A person must make every attempt in not isolating themselves from the outside world. It is important participate in networking opportunities that allows you to interact with fellow employees or other business owners. I joined the local Chamber of Commerce and attend many networking functions ~ keeping me interactive with the outside world because I have a tendency to withdraw into my work and this is not a healthy situation for anyone.
Another negative to telecommuting is not respecting working hours. It can be easy for work and home hours to blend and find you are still working at 10:00 pm while others may find it difficult to discipline themselves to be productive at all. No one is looking over your shoulder watching you and it might be too easy to call a friend for a chat when you should actually be working. There must be a balance between home and work.

Many clients may not be comfortable working with someone from a home office. They don't need to know your office is actually your kitchen table unless you tell them. By having a dedicated phone line with voice mail there is no reason why they would know the difference between your office at home and the one downtown. Personally most of my work is done with my computer using email and online programs. I don't actually need to speak regularly via the telephone with most of my clients.
Being self employed in a virtual business gives me many advantages that are important to me, most importantly the flexibility of my location. Using modern technology and free online programs such as foldershare and yousendit I can share files, sending and downloading large files as needed. Actually telecommuting software and tools available are unlimited. "Virtual" to me means freedom. Freedom to do the work I love where I
