Driving Test Updates

The driving test in Britain is being revamped, to make drivers more aware of actual road situations, rather than the old tried and tested method. The test is set to include more real life situations, and focus more on the critical safety elements of the daily drive. Currently, a participant follows the tester's instruction, and turn left at the next turn' is a common comment hear in the cabin of the car. But this new portion of the test will insist that potential drivers follow road signs, as they would do if there was no instructor in the car. The driving test agency believes that this will examine the candidate's ability to drive and navigate at the same time. This is a great idea, but is it too late>? With the introduction of GPS in most new cars, is now really the time for new learners to be taught how to follow signs, when learners for decades have got by learning how to do it themselves?

The critical safety portion of the test will involve the new driver turning across incoming traffic, or demonstrating how they would enter on a slip road, as this is where the majority of accident happens with new drivers. More time will be devoted to this area, and candidates will now only be required to complete one of three manoeuvres, as opposed to the two in four that they would have to demonstrate their skill in previously.
