Legalised Mugger Ban
Legalised Mugger Ban

It's a fear of a lot of people, that when returning to their car after a trip out, we may be met with being clamped. And stories of this are on the rise. But the new government have lashed out this week at the idea of legalised mugging, and plan to end the practice whereby people are forced to pay exorbitant charges to get their vehicles released.

More than nineteen hundred companies in the United Kingdom have the power to charge us up to eight hundred pounds a time in release fees for cars that are left too long in supermarkets, hospitals and railway car park areas. And motoring organisations have been inundated with complaints from genuine road users about illegal clamping and unfair fines, with rogue clampers failing to correctly display signage warning people of their attentions.

Ministers have drafted proposals to abolish the allowing of clamping in this country. This is two decades behind Scotland, who abolished the process twenty years ago. Last year, a car recovery company revealed the the amount of money paid to these clampers had reached "epidemic proportions", and Liberal Democrat Transport Minister Norman Baker, who is working on the plans with the Home Office, said: There is an extremely strong case to ban these rogue clamping activities, and the political will now exists to make sure that it happens.'

Government officials fear that this will create a back lash, and the government will have to pay out huge settlements to clampers for loss of earnings'
