subject: Kolkata City Hotels [print this page]

Kolkata - widely believed to be the literary and sports capital of India, is also known for its rich and vibrant heritage and culture, drawing thousands of tourists annually. To cater to this ever burgeoning number of tourists streaming from almost every corner of the world, Kolkata city hotels have notched up their service features to rival even international hospitality chains.

From the skyline kissing palatial Taj Hotels, Hindustan International and Swissotel to economy class hotels that offer excellent returns for money, Kolkata city hotels have their own unique character. Personally, I find the commitment of these hotels towards upholding the values and traditions of the Bengali hospitality extremely engaging. This, I believe, is what also enables Kolkata city hotels to contribute in a big way towards shaping the local culture.

The Taj Hotel hosts a Bengali cuisine week every year, featuring delicacies from across the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Among food festivals hosted by most Kolkata City hotels, the Taj's Bengali food festival is one of the most prestigious events where prize-winning chefs exhibit preparations steeped in local histories.

A highlight of the event is the delicacies prepared with Hilsa, the Bengali's favorite fish. I have also frequented Park Hotel, in Park Street, for their nostalgic allegiance to Kolkata's erstwhile proud colonial identity. Swissotel, Kolkata's latest premier hospitality destination, also boasts of fantastic lawns and a great Kolkata panoramic view, from as high as seventeen floors!

However, I must also mention the numerous more economical-options for the tourist in Kolkata, in places like Sudder Street, Park Street and Russell Street. Combining the advantages of decent living arrangements, great accessibility and good economy, these Kolkata City Hotels are highly recommended for the budget-conscious tourists.
