There are some pretty nice and interesting castles to see and visit in Lapland and there are some really interesting facts to be learned. Most of Finland's castles are situated in the southern part of the country. There was a time in history when Sweden ruled the land and because of the threat of Russian invasion, castles were built around Finland. The castles are some of the oldest buildings in the country and whilst some of them lay in ruins, some have been lovingly restored and cherished. Olavinlinna castle is situated in the city of Savonlinna and was first built around 1945 and again was built to stop Russian invasion. The Russians did take over the castle in 1743 and there are parts of the castle that differ from the rest of it, which is where the Russians made it their own. Today Olavinlinna castle has two museums where religious and historical artefacts are displayed, the huge summertime Opera festival is also held at the castle and it costs just a small fee to enter and tour around the castle.
Turku is another city that has a famous castle; Turku castle has been largely restored and is one of the largest buildings in Finland. The castle was originally a military fortress but over the years the castle was built up and became the main hub for administrative duties. These days Turku castle is again a tourist attraction and is well worth a visit. It is one of the most popular museums now in Finland and there is also medieval reenactments included in he tour. Another great castle is Kuusisto castle which is easily reached from Turku. Kuusisto castle is mostly in ruins but the history is amazing and it is worth a visit. It was first built in the 14th century and then demolished in 1528. Lastly Hame castle which was erected in the 14th century offers visitors a complete tour, Hame castle has been lovingly restored and was originally a Royal castle. In the 18th century Hame castle became a prison.
Not many people really think of Lapland in terms of history but if we really stop to think about it, all countries have their own unique history. It probably would be more enjoyable to visit the castle in the summertime but you can be rest assured that you will not be disappointed with these beautiful castles that offer both history and a step back in time.
