The credit crunch continues to swamp the country, and we are all eager to pinch the pennies and save on our outgoings to save guard our bank accounts.

And a poll has revealed this week that more than half of drivers feel that should something go wrong with their vehicle, they would not be able to pay to have it fixed.

Fifty three percent of drivers admit that in tightening their financial belt, they would not be able to afford the average cost of car repair, which is estimated to be 273.

Three quarters of the people surveyed admitted that they would be lost without their vehicles and find it difficult to get around, but more than five million revealed that their tight budgets could not afford to pay out, meaning that credit cards would be hit badly.

Effectively car users are just burying their heads in the sand with this false economy, as if they spare the servicing they may encounter a larger and more expensive problem in the future.

Drivers in Northern Ireland and the North West who claim to be the most dependent on their cars are the least able to fork out cash in the event of a breakdown, with fifty nine percent of car owners in these localities being able to meet the repair costs.

Cart owners in more affluent areas are more likely to be able to pay for work on their vehicles, with, Londoners being the most at ease with losing their vehicles.
