Tiverton is the largest town in Mid Devon with a population of approximately 17,500. Lying on the banks of the River Exe, Tiverton is a town steeped in history, boasting a 14th-Century castle which was occupied by the Earls of Devon up to the 16th Century and a canal offering a horse drawn passenger ride among it's attractions.
Tiverton was once a great wool centre and is now a modern industrial town, but there are still a great many reminders of it's historic past. The Tiverton market is in the centre of the historic town, evolving from many centuries ago when what is now the Tiverton Pannier market, was originally the site of a Roman encampment. The present day entrances and exits of the Pannier Market correspond to the original four entrances of the Tiverton Roman encampment. For many centuries since, trading in one form or another has taken place on the site and the present market in proudly maintaining that tradition.

The Mad Hatters on the main street of Tiverton is a first venture into this type of business for David and Sue Hunter, who have made it one of the most popular eating places in town. A paved path flanked by tables, chairs, trees and shrubs leads into this three-storey listed Georgian building, which is open from 9 to 3 Monday to Saturday, with longer hours in the summer. The good choice of home cooking spans the soup of the day, the fish of the day, filo king prawns, Cornish pasties, sweet & sour chicken and luscious Devon cream teas.

Sophie and Matt took over The Stag in December 07. It was in a rather sad state, but they saw the potential for it. So they decided to take on this big project and with a combination of hard work and determination they have been able to restore it to its former glory. It is now not only the oldest recorded public house in Devon - dating from 1197 - it is also a superb destination pub. The Stag has a tremendous amount of atmosphere thanks in part to it's great age and the fact that it is a true 'tunnel' pub - the passageway that horses used to be led through to the stables. It has a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all. Sophie's family own and run a nearby organic farm, West Yeo, and a great deal of the produce that goes into Matt's kitchen comes from that source. Organic beef, organic lamb, organic chickens, organic pork and more.
