Normal people always feel this common fear of the dark, called nyctophobia. A phobia is often seen in many different forms, and the fear of the dark is just one of them. This is often linked to traumas experienced by most people and manifests itself in the fear of dark places.
Phobia or the fear of people to a certain thing or event was initiated simply until it blossomed into panic attacks when it failed recognition and was untreated. Oftentimes, these attacks are perceived and can be easily distinguished such as the following:
Too strong fear
Fear of going crazy
An uneasy feeling of feeling trapped
Chest pains and heavy chest feeling
Nausea and sudden dizziness
Disorientation of one's self
Numbness
Faster beating rate of the heart
Onlookers and bystanders are often misguided with the notion that panic attacks are heart attacks when actually they are not. The patient is then brought to the emergency room of the hospital for diagnosis. Heart tests are very pricey while panic attacks are not readily diagnosed as such, and accurate analysis will take a long time.
Persons who are awfully terrified of the dark and regularly get scared by it will most likely develop the disorder unless subjected to a physician's care. They are on the road to recovery after the treatment because there is an effective cure for this disorder and the process is fast and easy. You cannot say that a person has undergone panic attacks after they are already cured because results are often successful.
Persons with nyctophobia should be given time to be familiar with new things, thus lessening their fears. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which this treatment is aptly called, works successfully for people with this kind of disorder. Other treatments that are self-help programs for phobic people are also available.
The process of recovery is initiated by subjecting the person with the disorder to knowledge on how to counter attacks when they happen. It is stressful for them to think of the incoming attacks and they will become more prone to nervousness when they do so. CBT is expensive and the use of other self-help programs can be a good substitute. This is more appropriate for them if they want privacy during treatments. Other treatments with the use of hypnosis and medications can also be utilized which will equally give the same successful results.
