I was recently asked by a friend of mine what the most romantic thing to do on holiday in Sharm el Sheikh. He was planning to pop the question to his girlfriend on an upcoming holiday and obviously wanted to find the ideal setting.
I had to give this a bit of thought as although I go to Egypt quite often, is almost always to go scuba diving or relax on the beach which although is a great way to spend a holiday, it wasn't really what he was looking for.
I tried to think of the nicest places to eat with the best views but nothing really sprung to mind as special. I started to think about the various excursions that were on offer to holiday makers. There are a number of excursion options available including trips by air to Cairo, Luxor and the Lost City of Petra in Jordan. You can even take a trip from Sharm to Jerusalem.
However, these trips are several hours long and quite tiring so I started thinking of options a bit closer to Sharm. There are plenty of possible options for a romantic setting such as a Bedouin dinner under the stars but the more I thought about it, there was only one real possibility. The trip to Mount Sinai and St Catherine's Monastery departs Sharm while it is still dark. After a couple of hours, you arrive at Mount Sinai in the middle of the desert and start to climb the mountain. From your vantage point, you wait in anticipation of the Sinai sunrise.
The desert in this part of Egypt is beautiful with a blend of sand and colourful mountains. As the sun appears and starts to climb in the sky, you start to feel its warm rays and the shadows dance around the contours of the surrounding mountains. It really is a magical and romantic moment. The trip to Mount Sinai is one of the daily tours from Sharm and is well worth getting up early for.
