One of the most enjoyable parts of Volleyball is spiking. There are quite a few different types of spike approaches and spikes, but they all involve hitting the ball over the net. Most spikes are done right at the net, but there are back row spikes which require the player to jump from behind the front court line when they hit the ball. Of course, when you have huge volleyball players that can jump a meter off the ground often they jump from behind the line and end up right on the net when they hit the ball anyway. Having good quality Shoes For Volleyball makes a big difference in terms of how high you can jump, and how quickly you can move.
There are generally 3 different positions for spiking. The first is an outside ball, which is run from either side of the court by a front court player. The second is a middle ball, run by the person playing in the middle on front court. The last is a back court spike, which is run by one of the three rear court players. Within those three types there are a number of different spike approaches. The more common ones are referred to as a 0, 11, A ball and pipe. A 0 is run from the right hand side of the court, an 11 is run from the left hand side of the court, an A ball is run through the middle and a pipe is run from the middle in back court. These terms vary considerably depending on what country you are from. What does not vary though, is the shoes that Volleyball Players wear. Most are either Asics or Mizuno Volleyball Shoes because these are the top two brands.
Often teams will make up their own language to confuse the opponents, because the spike chosen is most commonly called out before it happens. If the other team is unsure of what player is going to get the ball then they have less chance of reacting to it and are likely to lose the point. Spiking can be done by anyone, but in general the tallest people get the outsides and middles are run by someone with a decent amount of agility!
